Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is Security film or Bulletproof film?
Security film is a special type of film that can be installed on a glass window intended to reinforce it from falling apart from the impact of foreign objects such as rocks, hammers, and crow bars. The most common uses are first floor building windows, cars windows and first floor home windows. Bulletproof film, or ballistic film, is a stronger version of security film and and when applied to 1/2 inch or thick annealed glass is strong enough to stop the penetration of certain types of bullets. Our ballistic film with glass combo will easily stop a 9mm, S&W 40 and .38 Special. when applied to 1/2 inch thick annealed glass. Click here to see a demonstration video of our bullet proof film in action.

2. What type of guns and bullets that the bulletproof film can withstands?
One layer of bulletproof film applied to 3/8 inch to 1/2 inch (8mm ~ 12mm) glass thickness can withstand light arms and pistols rounds including 9mm, S&W 40, and .38 Special. With additional glass layers and/or film, it can withstands higher armor or higher speed traveling bullet such as AK47, 21 gauge shot gun, and various Machine Guns. Our bullet proof film by itself, is not bullet proof, just as glass is not bullet proof. However, when added to glass, the film and glass create a laminate that is strong enough to resist the above mentioned arms fire, and will also stop explosions, break ins, weather, and seismic events.

3. What are the differences between a bulletproof glass and bulletproof film?
Bulletproof glass is a laminate of 2 or more layers of glass and poly-carbonate and is typically 1 inch to 3 inch thick. The sizes of the glass are quite standard or require a custom make if you want something other than the standard sizes. Bullet proof glass requires thicker glass to withstand a bullet if compare with our bulletproof film applied to glass. For instance, a 1" bullet proof glass panel is comparable to a 1/2 inch window with our bullet proof film applied to it. Moreover, bulletproof glass require a skill technical team to install, heavier in weight and much more expensive than bulletproof film. Bullet proof glass typically costs around $90 to $100 per square foot vs. our ballistic film which is approximately $4 per square foot. In a retrofit application, bulletproof glass on existing buildings requires heavy renovation, possibly including the replacement or modification of the whole window or door frame. Whereas bulletproof film can be simply installed on existing glass in a matter of minutes.

4. How do you install security film or bulletproof film?
Security and Bulletproof film comes with a proprietary adhesive layer impregnated into one side of the film. The user can peel off the protective sheet and stick the film on the glass surface using water to activate the adhesive. Prior cleaning of glass surface with mild soap and clean water is required to prevent bubbles. The film needs to be cut according to the glass dimensions Before installing and not after as our bullet proof film is heavy duty and difficult to cut. The film can be cut by normal razor blade and straight edge. Click here to see our installation instructions.

5. How long does it takes to dry the film after installation??
During installation of film on glass surface, water is use to activate the adhesive on the bullet proof film during installation. Thus water, and air are captured between glass layer and security film. In order for the film appearance and performance to be 100% effective, 99% of the water between the glass and film and 100% of air bubbles need to be removed allowing the glue layer to completely adhere to the glass. In normal conditions or room temperature, it requires at least 30 to 60 days for the high strength adhesive to cure. During that time frame, you will see some mild water bubbles where moisture hasn't completely left the film. This moisture will eventually dry and fade away over the course of the curing period. The bullet proof film will not reach it's full strength until the film has completely cured.

7. What is the thickness of security film/ laminates?
CJBU-18 = 18mils (0.0180 inches ), (0.4572 mm ), (457.2 microns) - Ballistic Film
CJBU-12 = 12mils (0.012 inches), (0.30478mm), (304.8 microns) - Safety Film
Many customers ask us about our 21 mil bullet proof film that we used to sell. When we re-developed our new 18 mil bullet proof window film we discovered that it actually performed better than our 21.5 mil ballistic film. As a result, we discontinued our 21 mil security film to save our customers money.

8. What type of film / laminate should I use to burglarproof my windows?
If you are looking just to burglar proof your window and are not in need of creating a bullet proof window, our 12-mil security film is right for you. This film, while extremely heavy duty, is light weight enough to make application fairly easy, and will keep your costs down.
9. Will CJBU-18 18-mil ballistic film perform well against burglars as well?
Yes! If you install our ballistic film on your window, you will get a bullet proof window AND a burglar proof window at the same time. Our Bullet proof window film is actually just a stronger version of our 12-mil security film. In fact, many of our customers have applied our ballistic film on their windows and actually wrote us to tell us that our film repelled a burglar trying to break in with a baseball bat or hammer. If you are unsure of the best application for you, we would suggest that you error on the side of caution and use our bullet proof film to protect you windows for full protection.

10. Do I need special skill to install the bullet proof film / laminates on glass?
No special skill is needed to install our security film and ballistic films, only basic installation instructions. Click here to see our installation instructions and an installation video. If you are not up to the task, you can always hire a local window film installer in your yellow pages. Most of them are familiar with security film.

11. What is the duration or endurance of security and ballistic film / laminates after application?
The storage life of both our security and bullet proof film is 5 years. Meaning that is can be stored in rolls, in room temperature and standard humidity for up to 5 years wihout seeing any decrease in performance or strength. Once applied to a window, our film is designed to last for 30 years or more.

12. Can I install other types of film over bullet proof window film or security window film?
You can easily install tint, mirrored film and decorative film over either our ballistic film or security film without any problems. We do recommend that you wait for at least 48 hours to give our window film enough time to cure. Then you may apply any film you would like over our window film as long as it uses a mild standard adhesive like most tints and window films.

13. Can I cut the film to specific design like flower for decoration on glass and yet obtain the security level?
No...security and bulletproof film needs to cover the whole glass.
14. Do we need to install the film / laminates right inside the frame of window or door?
No need....security and bulletproof film only need to be installed on the visible surface of the glass. You do not need to dismantle the frame to install the film, but it will add additional strength.

15. What should I do if I need to increase glass and film / laminates layer for heavy armor protection?
Use Glass Sealant or Silicon Glue to add additional glass on the existing glass. Seal just the additional glass by the edge and not the whole glass surface.

21. Can I remove the security film / from window glass? Does it leave a mark or stain on glass?
The best way to remove the film from the glass is to use soapy water and a razor blade. After removing the film, some adhesive will remain on the glass. If soap doesn't remove all of the adhesive, you can remove the rest using a razor blade and a mild solvent. Once done, the window will be completely clean, clear and odor free.

22. After removing bullet proof film from a window, can I re-use the film / laminate again on other glass surfaces?
No, after removing our film from glass, it can no longer be used as a bullet proof or security film again. The adhesive cannot be reactivated and the laminate will be scratched.

23. Why immediately after installation can the film / laminates be peeled off easily?
Because there is still water/moisture between the glass and film. It requires at least 60 days to cure at room temperature

29. How many cars or vehicles could be fitted with one roll of film?
As our standard roll dimension is 5ft x 100ft (500 Square Feet) for 12-mil security film and 18-mil ballistic film thicknesses. You can simply divide it to the total glass dimension on the vehicle. However, many installers have indicated that they can cover the windows of 6-7 cars per roll of film. Larger SUV's generally require more window film and 1 roll only covers 5-6 SUV's. These numbers generally account for an allowance of 10 ~ 15% for wastage at corners or shape forming.
